Why THHN Weighs More Than Bare Copper
The difference between the two columns is the PVC insulation and nylon jacket THHN adds over the bare conductor. That extra weight isn't padding. It's what gives THHN its 90°C dry location rating and abrasion resistance for conduit and cable tray installations. As conductor size increases, the insulation gets proportionally thicker too, which is why the gap between the two columns widens at larger sizes.
What This Chart Is Useful For
- Shipping and freight estimates. Knowing the weight per foot before you order helps avoid surprises on freight class and cost.
- Cable tray load calculations. Distributed weight matters for support spacing and tray rating.
- Spool and reel handling. Confirming a spool's total weight before it's lifted or moved on site.
- Scrap and material estimating. Useful for contractors reconciling copper usage against a job.
