About Power Cable & Portable Cord

Portable cord and power cable are designed to handle repeated flexing, abrasion, oil, sunlight, and cold — wherever flexible, durable power distribution is needed. Mid America Wire & Cable stocks the full range of flexible power cables: SOOW and SJOOW EPDM-jacketed portable cord in 18 AWG through 2 AWG, 2-5 conductor configurations; Type W single and multi-conductor heavy-duty portable cable up to 500 MCM; Type G and G-GC three-phase portable power cable with integral grounding conductors for mining, construction, and temporary power distribution; DLO (Diesel Locomotive) single-conductor rubber cable for locomotive and battery-to-inverter applications; and entertainment cable (SC/E) for staging and broadcast. All portable cord meets UL 62 and CSA C22.2 No. 49 requirements.

Power Cable & Portable Cord — Frequently Asked Questions

SOOW is 600V rated; SJOOW is 300V rated. Both share the same double-O (oil-resistant jacket, oil-resistant insulation) and W (weather-resistant) designations. SOOW is the industry standard for commercial and industrial portable cord; SJOOW is used for lighter-duty residential and consumer applications.

Type W is a heavy-duty single- or multi-conductor portable power cable rated to 2000V with a thick EPDM rubber jacket. It's used for mining shovels, draglines, industrial cranes, large welding equipment, and other applications where the cable is repeatedly dragged, flexed, and exposed to heavy abuse.

No. NEC 400.12 prohibits the use of portable cord as a substitute for the fixed wiring of a structure. Portable cord is only permitted for pendants, portable equipment, temporary wiring (limited durations), and specific application exceptions. For fixed wiring, use THHN/THWN-2 or appropriate Article 310 building wire.

Yes. We stock welding cable (also called Class K and Class M) in 6 AWG through 4/0, in 600V and 100V (ground) ratings. Welding cable has extremely flexible fine-strand copper and rubber jacketing designed for repeated dragging and flexing on welding rigs.
