Mil-spec wire intimidates people who buy commercial wire all day, mostly because the part numbers look like serial numbers: M22759/16-14-9, M16878/4BFB5. But the system behind them is logical, and once you can read a part number you can spec, cross-reference, and order this wire as easily as THHN. Here's how the two biggest families work.

Reading an M22759 Part Number
Take M22759/16-14-9 apart left to right:
- M22759: the base specification (airframe wire)
- /16: the slash number, which sets insulation type, plating, and ratings. /16 is ETFE over tinned copper, 150°C. /32 is XL-ETFE, lighter and 200°C. /11 is PTFE over silver-plated copper.
- -14: wire gauge, 14 AWG
- -9: color code, 9 is white (0 through 9 follow the standard resistor-style color sequence)
The slash number does the heavy lifting. Two spools of M22759 with different slash numbers can be completely different products, so match the whole callout, not just "M22759."
Reading an M16878 Part Number
M16878/4BFB5 breaks down the same way:
- M16878: the base spec for electronic hook-up wire
- /4: the slash. /4 is PTFE at 200°C, 600V (Type E). /1 is PVC (Type B), /2 is PVC (Type C), /6 is thin-wall PTFE (Type ET).
- BFB5: coded gauge, stranding, and color in sequence
M16878 types also map to plain-language names you'll hear on the phone: "Type E wire" means M16878/4, "Type B" means M16878/1. Both naming styles refer to the same product.
Why Buy Mil-Spec When Commercial Wire Is Cheaper?
Sometimes the contract decides for you: defense and aerospace work flows down the spec, and substitutions aren't up for discussion. But plenty of commercial buyers choose mil-spec wire on merit:
- Temperature. PTFE and ETFE run at 150°C to 260°C, where PVC hook-up wire gives up at 80°C to 105°C.
- Size and weight. Thin fluoropolymer walls make the finished harness smaller and lighter, which is why avionics and robotics use it.
- Chemical resistance. Fluoropolymers ignore fuels, hydraulic fluid, and solvents that swell ordinary insulation.
- Traceability. Mil-spec production comes with lot traceability and QPL sourcing that some quality systems require.
Common Crosses
A few quick equivalences that come up constantly: SAE AS22759 is the current designation for what everyone still calls M22759. NEMA HP3 covers commercial equivalents of several M16878 PTFE types.
